Chapter Fifteen

Nevi and I spent most of the night talking. Mainly it was him talking and me interjecting with a question here and there. I discovered my lover was the leader of a large group of vampires born of humans. We decided human-vampires was a good term for them. They had banned together—along with other races of vampires which he told me I was better off not questioning him on for the time being—and they’d rid the world of a considerable amount of the rogue vampires. Unfortunately, although vampires do procreate, the rogues learned they could also create vampires by making sure the human ingested vampire blood within a few hours prior to death. Because of this, they were making vampires to replace those Nevi and his colleagues destroyed. He was sure it wasn’t just the rogues of the night-walkers performing this act. There were too many vampires for night-walkers to have been able to create them all.

I didn’t know why I never mentioned Geoffrey and his vampire search to Nevi. After all, from what I could tell they were both working for the same cause. I just didn’t. Something held me back.

By morning all of the fears and heebie jeebies I’d felt when I’d first learned of Nevi’s true identity were gone. I had no desire or intention of walking away from a relationship that felt as right as ours did.

Nevi explained that he found daylight uncomfortable but could walk in it, more so that a night-walker not born of human flesh. He preferred to live a lifestyle that encompassed night whenever possible. This was why I’d met him at such a late hour at his convenience store. He actually went into it in the evenings to manage as much as he could. He had a pretty competent staff and was rarely called upon to go there during daylight hours. This explained his continual disappearing acts in the middle of the night.

Seeing exhaustion overtake me, Nevi asked permission to sooth my neck wounds with a few drops of his blood so that I could rest more comfortably. He assured me that when I woke up the wound would have healed. He may have omitted things about himself but, as far as I could tell, he’d never lied to me…so I agreed.

He gently removed my bandage and scowled as he inspected my wound.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“You are fine. It just pains me to see what my daughter has done to you. It is not like her to act this way. She is like me. She inherited enough of my mother’s genes to allow her to live like a human. Her biting you comes as a great surprise,” he said.

“She never bit any of your other girlfriends?” This was something I found hard to believe.

“You are my first relationship since her mother died,” he admitted.

“That explains it then,” I groaned.

“I love you,” he whispered as he turned away and brought his wrist to his lips.
